Document defaults

With document defaults, you can set your preferred font, font size, spacing, alignment, and layout for every new document or draft you create.

Where to access Document defaults

From your Settings page:

• Select the Document defaults section from the Settings menu.

In the editor:

• Open any document and click the Editor settings gear icon on the top of the formatting panel. Select Document defaults to access.

Text styles

Choose how the text in your new documents should look, with:

• Font family: The typeface your writing appears in

• Font weight: How light or bold your text is (e.g., light → bold)

• Font size: Use the − and + controls to set your default text size

• Line spacing: The spacing between lines within a paragraph

• Alignment: E.g. left, center, right, or justified

Layout

Choose how your new documents are laid out:

• Pageless: One continuous document with no page breaks

• Pages: Print-style page breaks

Click Save to apply your defaults.

How defaults work

Your document defaults apply across all new documents. Whenever you create a document, Ellipsus uses the settings you've saved here. 

Documents you've already created will keep the settings they originally had, unless you manually change them.

Resetting to your defaults

You can still edit any individual document’s settings manually (e.g. by accessing the Format panel). Manual changes you make inside a document will only affect that document; they won't change your saved document defaults.

If you'd like to start fresh, select Reset to Ellipsus defaults. This will reset your saved default settings back to Ellipsus’ defaults (ex., Literata as the default font). It won't change any of your existing documents.

If you revert back to the free plan

Document defaults are an Ellipsus Plus feature. If you revert back to the free plan, nothing changes in your existing documents—any doc that was created with document defaults keeps those settings.

However, new documents will open with Ellipsus' defaults, rather than your document defaults.

If you return to Ellipsus Plus, you can set your document defaults again, which will affect all new documents.
