What are your views on censorship?
We limit the information we collect (we only collect what’s necessary to create your account, maintain and improve our services, and provide support), and we believe strongly in creative freedom. We’re not interested in being the content police.
You can read more about this in our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
What kind of content is allowed in Ellipsus?
Ellipsus was founded on principles of user autonomy and privacy. We’re deeply committed to creative freedom (in fact, we’re pretty outspoken about it), and believe that writers should own their words, ideas, and creative futures without fear of censorship from hostile entities.
Coming from fanfic backgrounds, we’ve witnessed many bans and shutdowns of writing platforms over the years, and we have no interest in policing what creatives do. We want Ellipsus to provide a safe and secure space where you can write whatever you want.
NSFW content
NSFW content is not illegal. It is permitted in Ellipsus. (For definitions of illegal content, please see our TOS and refer to your local laws for clarification.)
Writing in the text editor is private by default. We do not actively look at or police your documents. (This has been a part of our Privacy Policy from the beginning.)
Is fan fiction allowed on Ellipsus?
Yes indeed! We absolutely support fanfic (and might write it ourselves 👀).
Paying for Ellipsus Plus features does not mean your fan fiction (or writing in general) is being monetized. Ellipsus Plus supports our hosting platform—it has nothing to do with the content of your writing.
What about public content?
If you share your writing publicly via a Reader link or Ellipsus’s sharing features, it’s subject to our guidelines and local laws. Beyond that, we don’t impose content restrictions on what you write privately in Ellipsus.
We don't actively police public work, unless it's reported to us/we receive avalid legal or DMCA request. (If so, we will handle that according to our policies and legal obligations).
It is the author’s discretion to share their work publicly, or keep it private.
Payment processors and Ellipsus
Ellipsus is primarily a writing tool with sharing features, not a marketplace or paid publishing platform where creators sell individual works through Stripe (the payment processor for Ellipsus Plus). Stripe does not have access to Ellipsus documents, and we do not share user writing with payment processors.
If Stripe or any other payment provider created a serious conflict with our values, user privacy, or the kinds of (lawful) writing our users create, we would evaluate alternatives. If necessary, we would migrate payment providers. Longer term, if publishing and creator payments become a part of Ellipsus, we would build payment systems with those risks in mind from the very beginning.
How Ellipsus balances user anonymity with legal requirements
We never want Ellipsus to be a place where users feel watched or exposed. Anonymity and privacy is one of the backbones of Ellipsus, and have been major priorities since day one.
At the same time, we have to comply with applicable laws. We intervene as little as we reasonably can, and respond to legal issues only when required.
