Use colors to differentiate characters, highlight text you want to return to, and more.

Add color to your writing

With text colors, you can make sure individual letters, words, or paragraphs pop with color. Simply select a section of text and choose your preferred color from the color picker.

You can access the color picker from the formatting panel or formatting bar. We currently support nine hues (not including the default white / black)—and five shades per color.

Click (or tap) on a color to reveal a palette of secondary shades—you can stick with the main shade or choose a darker / lighter one.

If you want to return to the default text color, highlight any colored text, then open the color picker and select Reset color or click on the default color, which is the hue on the bottom right.

Who can see your text colors?

Text colors will be visible to anyone with access to a doc or draft. That includes invited collaborators and—if view-only links are enabled—anyone with a link to your doc or draft.

We curated our palettes with accessibility in mind—lighter shades will work best with our dark theme, and darker shades will work best with our light theme. Keep in mind that your collaborators and viewers can choose their own theme when viewing your work.

Exporting text with colors

Exporting from Ellipsus

Currently, text colors will carry over when you copy a doc or draft as HTML, when you share to AO3, or when you export to PDF. (There might be small rendering differences across browsers and platforms—if you notice something weird, please report it to [email protected].)

Pasting from other platforms

Copying and pasting between different platforms will have mixed results—we plan to refine this behavior in the coming weeks. Right now, text colors are most compatible with Google Docs—any text colors should render when pasted into Ellipsus. (But note that hues outside our current palette won’t be available from the color picker until a future update.)

Pasting into other platforms

Colors should carry over when pasting text from Ellipsus into Google Docs, Microsoft Word, and Scrivener. If you run into issues or exceptions, please get in touch at [email protected].
